IMF to look into FTT
IMF director Dominique Strauss-Kahn now says, that the IMF will look into the issue of a Financial Transaction Tax (FTT).
In his speech in London on November 23rd, Mr Strauss-Kahn said:
"... we have been asked by the G-20 to look into financial sector taxes. This is an interesting issue. Can the tax system help reduce excessive risk-taking in the financial sector? Can it be used to further the legitimate goals of fairness and equity in this area? There are a number of ways to think about this, and we will look at it from various angles and consider all proposals. Let me say that the financial sector should contribute to the cost of the rescue and to limiting recourse to public financing in the event of a future crisis. I suggest this for practical reasons because, in my view, there would not be political support in parliaments for a rescue on the scale we have seen during this crisis."Last modified 2009-12-01 04:14 PM
