Progress and Action in London 19 November
Please mark this date in your diaries - Saturday 19 November - Stamp Out
Poverty's one-day conference entitled: 'Progress and Action', writes David Hillman in a message to "tobin-europe".
This year has seen enormous progress relating to the Currency TransactionTax (CTT) proposition in the UK and other innovative taxation instruments to
finance development. From speeches at Davos in January through to agreements
on an Air Ticket levy in April; from a report on innovative financing from
the IMF and the World Bank to announcements in the G8 and the Millennium
Review Summit communiqués, we are witness to a year in which literally month
by month we are seeing new ground being broken.
We are pleased to announce the following speakers:
Jean-Pierre Landau, whose report on innovative financing has provided the
backbone to progress on new funding mechanisms
Professor Avinash Persaud, leading UK foreign exchange expert, a past
opponent of the campaign, now one of its advocates
Professor Rodney Schmidt, an architect of the current thinking on the how
the CTT could be implemented (who will be coming from Canada to
participate).
The audience (expected to number about 100) will be drawn from Stamp Out
Poverty Network members, European and International partners, finance
journalists and academics, representatives from City institutions, think
tanks and Government departments (specifically the Treasury and DFID).
At this time Stamp Out Poverty will be publishing a short report giving a
detailed response to counter the few outstanding issues the Treasury still
has with our stamp duty proposition, which they have already acknowledged as
'technically possible'.
The conference will be held in London - we will confirm the venue in a
forthcoming email very shortly.
The day will be divided into 2 distinct sections. The morning will
concentrate on presentations and question and answer sessions. The afternoon
will be more interactive and concentrate on how to take concrete next steps
on both the CTT and other innovative tax initiatives in the UK, Europe and
globally. We plan to round the event off with a reception.
We are particularly keen that we are joined by leading advocates and
campaigners from across the world.
Please let me know if you would like to attend. I look forward to hearing
from you.
My very best wishes
David
