Global Campaign Kicked Off
Ruby van der Wekken represents the Network Institute for Global Democratization (NIGD). She is also on the cttcampaigns.info team. From the emails she sent immediately after the CTT-seminar (before she rushed to another meeting on the debt problem), I gather that she is positively surprised about the consensus reached at the seminar:
- We were agreed about the democratizing potential of the CTT, that there is a link between CTT and democratization at the global level. This is a global campaign which has global goals. It should have an impact on the South. A European campaign for the CTT also has a part to play. We are going to urge governments to convene an international conference - hopefully leaders like Lula will stay in the forefront with this.
- It was recognized that "Draft Treaty" helps to clarify the goals of this global campaign, van der Wekken reports. Here she is referring to the precise proposal on CTT that has been put forward some time ago by professors Lieven Denys and Heikki Patomaki, see www.nigd.org/ctt. The Belgian Tobin-Spahn law from July 2004 was seen as another important tool in the campaign.
Last, but not least: all participants in the seminar were informed about www.cttcampaigns.info!
